about this website.....
The Norwich Western Link road is now planned to join the new NDR (Norwich District Racetrack)....or 'Broadland Northway' that currently ends at a large roundabout on the A1067 Fakenham road, to the A47 Dereham road.
A Council Statement in 2016......
"Why the NDR doesn't join the A47....
Having taken specialist advice, we (Norfolk District Council) decided not to promote the section of the Northern Distributor Road between the A47 and the A1067 Fakenham Road on environmental grounds, which was agreed by Cabinet in 2005.
The main reason for not including a link across the Wensum Valley was due to its status as a Special Area of Conservation and protected due to its international importance in biodiversity conservation.
The area is designated as being of international importance and the main purpose of the NDR is to distribute traffic around the north side of Norwich.
It is not intended to act as a bypass; the A47 Southern Bypass already provides this.
The NDR remains very effective at distributing the traffic without the western link to the A47 and still provides significant transport benefits."

However, no sooner was the NDR construction underway, Norfolk County Council announced that they were making the Western Link a "...top priority.."
The final route HAS BEEN CHOSEN but your opposition to this senseless plan is needed more than ever.
The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) Norfolk, Wensum Valley Alliance, the Wensum Woodlanders and Norfolk Wildlife Trust are very concerned about the proposed Western Link, which we're afraid was almost inevitable once permission was given for the NDR (Broadland Northway) to be constructed. We feel that environmental damage and harm to nearby communities will be the result whichever of the routes is selected. particularly when large number of new houses are built along the Broadland Northway.
Their position is set out here:

As well as the wildlife in the Wensum Valley area, much of the woodland on the proposed route, contain many trees that are in excess of 100 years old, "planting new trees" just will not do. These woods are home to Fallow, Roe and Muntjac deer, badgers, fox, bats, owls and a host of woodland birds. Dividing these woodlands with a dual carriageway has a drastic effect on the wildlife there. Please have a look at the photos below, all taken in these woods. |
Change
July 5th 2019: Route has been chosen.
August 2022: it has subsequently been developed into a four lane highway, crossing of the Wensum Valley via a concrete and rusty steel viaduct, dividing and destroying a beautiful woodland area. This is an NCC glossy "artist impression" of part of the route. The reality however is VERY different. Please see the LATEST NEWS tab. Bringing destruction to woodlands, with devastating noise and pollution and the likely increase in housing developments....
